Adult Swim's Leading New Show of This Year Gets a Substantial Renewal for Seasons 2 and 3.

In October of last year, Adult Swim saw the return of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. However, not long after, the channel unveiled a completely new animated series with a markedly softer feel. Haha, You Clowns proved to be heartwarming and calm, reminiscent of a animated take of a contemplative talk show. In an era often defined by cynicism, this show's earnestness resonated deeply and propelled it a surprise hit.

A Two-Season Greenlight

On December 18th, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for a further two seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to develop the world of the Campbell family. The show follows three polite teenage brothers whose central trait is their profound affection for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four main characters.

"I’m so grateful to the fans of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and shared it with others," stated Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for a little longer."

Network Praise

The official statement also included laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and uniquely eerie." He shouted out the fans who found the show and supported its uniquely offbeat appeal.

"All of you got behind this new show, rooted for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Wholesome Alternative

Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a gentle counterpart" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something unexpectedly cozy about watching this endearing family navigate their simple existence.

At the time, creator Joe Cappa stated his hope to evolve comedy past its current sarcastic tone. He attributed this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.

“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we are trapped in,” noted Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we just have to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”

The Path Forward

With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa may well help usher in that comedic shift. Or at the very least, the renewal guarantees audiences more opportunities to experience the gentle humor of the unique Campbell clan.

The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The entire series is ready to watch on HBO Max.
