Ben & Jerry's Co-Founder Claims Parent Company Halted Pro-Palestinian Frozen Dessert Flavor
The original creators behind the well-known frozen dessert company Ben & Jerry's has stated that parent company Unilever prevented the introduction of an innovative Palestine-themed ice cream flavor.
The entrepreneur, who established the business alongside his partner, announced how he will personally create the controversial flavor within a personal collection showcasing causes Ben & Jerry's has been prevented from speaking out about.
Ongoing Conflict Between Creators versus Parent Company
The recent development intensifies the continuing tension between the internationally recognized dessert company with Unilever, the British packaged goods giant which acquired Ben & Jerry's since 2000.
Both founders have claimed how the parent company along with its ice cream arm the Magnum brand unlawfully blocked their company against "maintaining its activist principles".
Watermelon Sorbet as an Emblem of Solidarity
The entrepreneur stated via social media that he is creating a new watermelon-based sorbet, asking for consumer ideas regarding the product's name and potential ingredients.
“I'm accomplishing what they couldn't,” the founder declared from his kitchen. “I'm making a watermelon-based ice cream that advocates for permanent peace in Palestine while demanding repairing the damage that was done there.”
The watermelon has emerged as a symbol for solidarity with the Palestinian people because of its colors, that mirror the colors in the Palestinian flag – red, green, black and white.
Historical Activism and Current Developments
In 2021, Ben & Jerry's refused to sell its products in areas under Israeli control, resulting in the parent company selling their Israel business over to an Israeli distributor, thereby permitting ongoing distribution in disputed territories.
This upcoming dessert series is being developed under Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the socially conscious ice cream brand that was first created in 2016 to support former political contender Senator Sanders via the product "Bernie's Back".
Management Changes and Future Intentions
The founder stated that he plans to create other ice cream flavors that address issues which the company was prevented from addressing publicly by corporate restrictions.
The announcement comes after co-founder Mr. Greenfield resigned from Ben & Jerry's in September, after decades of involvement, mentioning worries regarding how its independence was compromised after Unilever's decision to restrict its social activism.
Previously, Ben Cohen remarked how “My partner has a really big heart and this conflict with Unilever was breaking it."
“My conscience compels me to continue to work inside the company to advocate for corporate autonomy so that the company can achieve its ethical purpose, the values that established its foundation and has maintained for decades," he told journalists.
