New York Jets Head Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After New York City Incident

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and believes the athlete will be OK after being shot in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.

Glenn shared that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “upbeat” during their recent conversation.

“What reassures me, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His wife and child, they are holding up and he will walk away from this just fine.”

The coach did not know when Boyd might be released the hospital, where his condition is described as critical but stable.

“Don’t know just yet,” he added. “However, I can share, from our conversation, he felt really upbeat. Furthermore, that’s what gives me comfort, given his positive frame of mind and his words reflect that optimism.”

New York police shared surveillance images earlier this week of a suspect in the incident involving Boyd. The reason behind the incident is currently under review and police mentioned it remains uncertain if Boyd was the intended victim. No other injuries according to reports.

The shooting happened around 2 a.m. on Sunday near Madison Square Garden and Times Square. Boyd, twenty-nine, was transported to a medical center after suffering a wound to the stomach, according to authorities. The shooter fled the scene.

Glenn said Boyd has been on his mind “a ton” since the news broke. He further stated that Boyd and his spouse just had a baby.

“My initial concern, he just had a kid,” Glenn said. “And I’m thinking about his wife, considering his child and I hope he recovers fully. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“There is a procedure involved, I’ll keep private, but I’m happy at the fact that he will recover excellently.”

Boyd hasn’t played this season, his first with the Jets, after being placed on injured reserve on 18 August with a shoulder injury that involved surgical repair.

He joined the Jets as a free agent in spring and was expected to be a significant contributor of the team’s updated special teams under Glenn and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. However, he got hurt during a practice session on early August and had to be helped off.

Boyd has remained around the team all season long while working his way back.

“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn commented. “In fact, he comes to the games all the time. He is completely involved. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”

Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, began his career with Minnesota after getting drafted in the seventh round by Minnesota out of the University of Texas in 2019. He signed with the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and later was with the Texans after that. Boyd signed a one-year contract valued at $1.6 million with the Jets in the spring.
