Prison Surprise: Brazil's Ex-President Jair Bolsonaro Faces Life in Prison

He contested justice and justice triumphed.

A couple of months subsequent to receiving a 27-year sentence for attempting to “annihilate” Brazil’s political system, former president Jair Bolsonaro now looks headed to prison.

Anticipated Imprisonment

The convicted coup-monger – who has been living under home confinement in his residence while a series of legal procedures and petitions play out – is broadly anticipated to be jailed in the coming days, amid increasing talk that he will be transferred to a notorious maximum security facility.

Historical Statements on Inmates

During Bolsonaro’s 40-year time in politics, the conservative ex- soldier exhibited scant compassion for Brazil’s jailed individuals.

“Why should we provide these lowlifes a comfortable existence?” he previously wondered. “They deserve to be messed, period. That's my view.”

On another occasion, Bolsonaro declared: “If you don’t want to wind up there, the only thing required is not sexual assault, kidnap or rob.”

Incarceration Facility Discussion

But the prospect of Bolsonaro himself winding up in the Papuda high-security prison in Brasília has appalled backers, four of whom this week inspected the prison in an obvious bid to dissuade the supreme court from sending him there.

Izalci Lucas, a lawmaker from Bolsonaro’s allied group who was among that group, claimed he predicted the elderly leader to be jailed in the following week and a half and feared his assigned prison could be Papuda.

He asserted Bolsonaro’s serious intestinal problems – the consequence of a near-fatal knife attack during the last election race – meant it would be dangerous to keep the one-time head of state there. “His health is highly critical. He cannot to handle it if they send him to Papuda … It will be dreadful,” he commented, who also worried about overcrowded cells and the condition of inmate food.

When inspecting Papuda, Lucas remembered witnessing cells containing 40 prisoners: “It's virtually one square meter per prisoner.

“We conversed to the convicts and they protest, of course, of the awful food,” continued the senator.

Supporters React

Lucas is not the only voice voicing opinions prior to the one-time head of state's predicted detention.

Writing in a prominent daily, a different supporter, the former government official Fábio Wajngarten, deplored the “brutal” end to Bolsonaro’s “spotless” political career and asserted Brazil was about to experience “the largest unfairness in its history”.

“It represents an wrong that erodes the hearts of millions people in Brazil,” Wajngarten wrote.

Varied Popular Opinion

This could be true due to the considerable support Bolsonaro maintains on the right-wing. However his anticipated imprisonment has also warmed the hearts of millions individuals who believe he deserves to be incarcerated for planning to stop his successor from assuming office – and additionally plotting to have him killed.

The lawmaker, a politician for the current leader's Workers’ party, said: “No one desires Bolsonaro to be sent in a dark cell. Not a soul wants Bolsonaro to be placed in isolation. Nobody desires Bolsonaro to lack food or for him to have to sleep on the floor. We wish him to get proper care – but proper handling while incarcerated. He can’t carry on being his own prison warden for his whole life.”

Otoni was struck by how Bolsonaro backers, who have spent years praising the harsh treatment of prisoners, had abruptly become aware to their rights. “Only now has the conservative fringe – which has consistently asserted that human rights were not for criminals – chosen to tour a jail to discover what conditions are truly like,” he remarked.

“He is a offender,” the congressman maintained, but that did not mean he deserved “degrading, insulting handling”.

Potential Incarceration Facilities

Regardless of talk that Bolsonaro could be sent to Papuda, which now holds about 14,000 detainees, his expected destination seems to be a nearby penitentiary for police officers and other “unique” inmates known as Papudinha (Small Papuda).

Its cells are considerably more pleasant than those in the main prison, although still a far cry from the opulence Bolsonaro had while residing in the stunning official residence, about 12 miles away.

According to reports, the accommodation Bolsonaro could likely inhabit in Papudinha measures about 260 square feet – about the size of a couple of car spots – and features a 130 square foot WC with a bathing area and a 130 square foot balcony. “He could be allowed to have a television and also a small fridge in his cell as long as they were supplied by his family,” information stated.

Political Reactions

He denounced the rumoured plan to send the one-time head of state to Papuda as “a type of revenge” on the part of the presiding magistrate who led Bolsonaro’s legal case and will determine his outcome in the {
