That Gruesome Cartoon Film Conclusion That Lingers Viewers
Out of every mature animated films I’ve personally viewed, no other has lingered in my mind as much as the fear-filled finale of a graphically gory as well as deeply subversive film from 2022 Unicorn Wars.
Back in 2015’s, this Spanish filmmaker crafted a grim, bleak and often savage universe that included some tiny , desolate hints of optimism.
Although Unicorn Wars seems like it stemmed from a drive to expand the medium further, the director explained that it was actually an attempt to express a widespread, cross-cultural theme regarding “the shared root of each battle.”
That message is conveyed via a squad of colorful pastel bears , openly modeled after a famous line of lovable characters.
Growing up in a culture focused on aggression and the war machine, many of the bears are obsessed with killing unicorns, due to a holy book that tells the bears they used to be kings of the woods, until these creatures expelled them.
A few have not completely accepted the indoctrination, , choose to try out narcotics and fornicate outdoors.
In contrast to their cuddly counterparts, these colorful critters have visible genitals , clear urges.
For a particular particularly cruel, cynical bear, the bear named Bluey, the battle against unicorns becomes a route to control — and specifically to supremacy over his more tender, more compassionate sibling the character Tubby.
Bluey is a bully , an apparent sociopath , and while terror takes over his squad and claims his teammates sequentially, he seizes increasingly power on his own behalf, via progressively bloody, damaging approaches.
At the same time, these mythical beings are enduring their own terror, in the form of an expanding, deadly beast in their forest.
“At the beginning, it seems like a lighthearted film,” the filmmaker commented. “But then it becomes a more serious and sorrowful movie. And in the finale, it becomes a horror film.”
The Unicorn Wars commences similar to among the quirky movies from a legendary animator, that discover a naughty glee in allowing cartoon characters swear, shoot each other, or sex each other up.
Subsequently it becomes more akin to a darker movie from that creator, with increasingly explicit brutality , a palpable connection to genuine horror of war.
Ultimately, it is an outright theatrical horror bloodbath.
The horror that makes the film an ideal spooky-season watch begins much sooner than that description suggests.
The Unicorn Wars is ideal for the most dedicated lovers of violence, for lovers of graphic films who desire to watch something they’ve never watched previously, and who can handle a narrative that pulls absolutely no punches.
See it in a dark room without any distractions, and the conclusion will dig into your mind and linger.
