The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Reveals He Has a Plan for How Pluribus Might Finish... Currently.
Vince Gilligan never anticipated that Pluribus would emerge as a massive hit. “God bless the fans,” he remarks. “I was surprised by the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”
As the debut season of the acclaimed sci-fi show coming to an end—and Season 2 officially in the works—the creative team recently discussed the viewer reception and whether it will impact the storyline of Pluribus.
Regarding the Tremendous Audience Reaction
Anyone might to get sidetracked by the constant speculation and online debates regarding Pluribus. The creator is striving to avoid both.
“The experience is akin to an endless supply of hot fudge sundaes and being in a state of bliss,” he explains. “It's the greatest thing, but I get wind of it through word of mouth, and that's on purpose. I have never Googled myself, nor do I ever want to. It's quite the opposite. It's a rabbit hole I know I would get lost in and then I'd be never leaving the house from the hardware store and I'd never leave my living room.”
Despite Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s it's impossible to ignore the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.
“We don't try to change the plot,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not changed by online forums.”
“It's wiser to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan concludes.
A Pressing Query: Will Vince Gilligan Have a Plan for the Ending of Pluribus?
Considering Gilligan and his team aren’t being guided by audience theories, does that mean they have already decided how Pluribus will finally conclude? In short yes… in a way.
“We've developed some compelling concepts about how the story could conclude,” Gilligan reveals. “yet we stand ready to throw out a solid concept for a better idea. That philosophy has guided us in well on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we get a better idea and I expect we'll continue doing that.”
Alternatively, if all else fails, director and writer Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to use as a backup.
“I constantly suggest that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and we're in there,” Smith jokes, “but no one is buying it.”
Then again, why not reference the legendary finales?
“I want Carol to wake up in bed next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan adds, smiling.
Pluribus is streaming now on the streaming service.
