Our team is checking images and video shared earlier today that purport to show the scene of a alleged vehicle-borne explosive explosion that authorities in Russia say fatally injured a high-ranking military officer in Moscow.
Russian authorities stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was in the vehicle that exploded and that he succumbed of his wounds. A probe is under way.
The initial step to verify the location from which the images originated relied on social media reports indicating the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the capital city of Russia.
Our analysis employed street-view imagery on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex Maps to corroborate the distinctive yellow hue of a adjacent apartment building seen in the video.
Identifying additional buildings, lamp-posts and the road configuration confirmed where the footage were taken.
We also checked that the video clips were new and that the images had not been manipulated.
