Thiago Pitarch in action
The teenager has featured in seven games for Real Madrid, featuring five appearances in the starting lineup.

When an teenage creates club a historic moment in a pivotal European tie against City, it naturally attracts acclaim and the spotlight.

In only his first start in the competition - and fifth game for the team - the young midfielder suitably impressed as the 15-time European champions secured a three-nil last-16 first leg lead at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The teenager, who also made his club debut in the qualifying round a month ago with a cameo off the bench at Sporting Lisbon, then helped Los Blancos defeat the English Premier League side in Tuesday's second leg to confirm a quarter-final place.

At 18 years and 226 days, Pitarch was the team's most youthful starter to begin two matches in the Champions League knockout stages, beating Brazil forward Vinicius Jr's record by 10 days.

A Meteoric Rise Through The Academy

This talent is the most recent to emerge from the club's academy and is rapidly cementing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most exciting young players.

He signed for Real from CD Leganes in the summer of 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico Madrid and Getafe's academies, and starting out for the Juvenil C team, where he quickly made a strong impression.

Pitarch worked his way up to the B team and it was during a friendly match in which they played against the academy's first team, then managed by the former defender, where the teenager is said to have caught the attention of the present manager, who replaced the previous coach in January.

Spanish media would later label the moment as "an instant connection," adding he stood out not only for his skill on the ball, but for the vitality, character and drive he added to the team.

'His Greatest Quality Remains His Personality'

In the pre-season of 2025, ex-manager Xabi Alonso called up Pitarch to train with the senior squad and gave him playing time in pre-season.

However, it was Arbeloa's appointment that proved the defining moment in his career as he was introduced as a second-half replacement in each leg against the Portuguese side that set up the meeting with Pep Guardiola's team.

"I have dreamed of this each night when sleeping, the first day I started playing the game, each day you head to training and each day you play a match," stated the player after his debut.

"I've just achieved my dream with the greatest club in the world and in the best competition."

Handed a starting debut in the Spanish league against his former club - where he was for several seasons after arriving from Atletico in 2018 - he has kept his spot for the next four as injuries to Bellingham and Dani Ceballos created an opening.

Pitarch has seized it with displays that have belied his youth and experience.

"He's a extremely fast footballer, and you can observe what he's capable of," said the coach. "He is incredibly dynamic, with great stamina, work-rate and mobility."

The player's mindset has also impressed his coach.

"His greatest quality is his character," continued he. "He always wants the ball, and even under pressure, he remains unfazed.

"I realize people are surprised to see him start in a European fixture, but he is selected because I had total confidence in him to do what he usually does.

"Thiago will keep receiving opportunities with the main squad. It is delightful to coach a talent like him."

Spain or Morocco?

Pitarch was born in a Madrid suburb, in the Madrid region, and grew up fully immersed in the local game, moving through youth setups before joining Real Madrid's renowned youth academy.

He possesses both Spanish and Moroccan nationality, giving him the choice to play for both nations at the highest level.

Under international regulations, players may represent multiple nations at junior level without being permanently tied, with the final decision only binding once they appear in a competitive senior international match.

He has featured for Spain at underage levels, representing both the U19 and under-20 teams, and participated in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where La Roja reached the quarter-finals.

Despite this, he has not yet decided to any senior national team, who are monitoring his progress with interest.

Speaking recently, the player said: "I haven't made my final decision yet. Things are great with the Spanish federation, but I'll make a decision in the near future."

His situation echoes that of other dual nationality players such as club colleague Brahim Diaz and Barca star Lamine Yamal. While 18-year-old Lamine chose La Roja, Brahim opted to represent the Atlas Lions.

Eyes on the Prize

At present, his attention is on establishing himself in the Madrid lineup and repaying his manager's belief.

He featured for 74 minutes in the 2-1 victory at City, which sealed a five-one overall triumph and a last-eight tie with Bayern Munich.

He was replaced by another academy player in Manuel Angel underscored the coach's confidence in the next generation to help the team pursue future success.

After his notable contributions so far on the Champions League, the midfielder is expected to play a key role in that.

"The manager treats me the identical way. We deal with it very naturally. I try not to overanalyze it too much - I have to deserve my minutes on the field," he said following the win at Manchester.
